About Midland · Celebrating 120 Years
A riverfront borough with a proud history
Founded in 1906 on the banks of the Ohio River, Midland has grown from a steel company town into a close-knit community of neighbors, small businesses and the arts.
Our Story
From company town to hometown
In 1905, a group of Pittsburgh industrialists purchased land along a bend of the Ohio River to build the Midland Steel Company. The Borough of Midland was incorporated the following year, in 1906, and grew up around the mill.
In 1911 the operation was sold to the Pittsburgh Crucible Steel Company, and by the end of World War I Crucible employed some 2,700 workers. Midland’s population peaked at nearly 6,500 residents in 1950.
Like many river valley communities, Midland felt the decline of the American steel industry in the 1970s and 1980s. Today the borough is focused on what has always made it strong: its people, its neighborhoods, Lincoln Park and the regional draw of the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center.
